ඒ කාලේ මීගමුව දිස්ත්‍රික්කයක්. අද වගේ මීගමුව ගම්පහ දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ කොටසකුත් නෙමේ, ගම්පහ කියලා දිස්ත්‍රික්කයක් 1978 වෙනකම් තිබුනෙත් නැහැ. මීගමුව කියන්නේ වෙනම දිස්ත්‍රික්කයක්. වර්ග සැතපුම් 247.5ක ලංකාවේ තිබුන කුඩාම දිස්ත්‍රික්කය. 148, 240ක ජනගහනයක් ජීවත්වූ, ලංකාවේ කොළඹ හැරුනහම දෙවෙනියට වැඩිම ජනඝනත්වයක් හෙවත් වර්ගසැතපුමකට 599දෙනකු ජීවත්වූ ලංකාවේ දෙවැනි ජනාධිකම දිස්ත්‍රික්කය වූ බව...
එවැනි අධික ජනඝනත්වයක් තිබුනත්, 1900වෙද්දී ලංකාවේ ඉහලම සෞඛය තත්වයක් තිබු දිස්ත්‍රික්කය මීගමුව. ලංකාවේ අඩුම මරණ ප්‍රමාණයක් හෙවත් මිනිසුන් 1000ක්ට 18.8ක් පමණක් වාර්තාවූ දිස්ත්‍රික්කය වගේම 1898-1904 කාලය තුල ලංකාවේ අඩුම ළමා මරණ ප්‍රමාණයක් වාර්තාවූ දිස්ත්‍රික්කයත් මීගමුව. ඒ වගේම ලංකාවේ රෝහලක වැඩියෙන්ම විදේශීය කන්‍යාසොහොයුරියන් ප්‍රමාණයක් (Catholic nuns) ස්වේචාවෙන් සේවයකල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයවී තිබෙන්නත් මීගමුව. එම යුගයේදී මීගමුව දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ සෑම මීසමකම කතෝලික පල්ලිය විසින් දියත්කල සෞඛය සහ පෝෂණ වැඩසටහන් ක්‍රියාත්මකකර තිබෙනවා... මිනිස්සු තම දරුවන්ගේ බර කිරාගැනීමටත්, තුවාලයකට බෙහෙත් දමාගැනීමටත් පැමිණ ඇත්තේ එක්කෝ මඩමට නැතිනම් පල්ලියේ ශාලාවට. එහෙත් ස්වෙච්චා පදනමක්මතවත් දේශීය/විදේශීය කන්‍යාසොහොයුරියන්ට (catholic nuns) ලංකාවේ රෝහල්වල කටයුතු කිරීමට නොහැකිවන ලෙස අණපනත් ගෙනත්, 1963වෙද්දී විදේශීය කන්‍යාසොහොයුරියන්ගේ වීසා අත්හිටවා ලංකාවෙන් පිටුවහල්කර තිබෙනවා. එම නිසා මීගමුවේ ඉහතකී පල්ලිවල/මඩම්වල තිබූ සෞබ්‍ය මාධ්‍යස්ථාන වැසීගොස් ඇත. රෝහල්වල සේවයකල, ඇප-උපස්ථානකල හෙදි කන්‍යා සොහොයුරියන්ගේ අමිල සේවය මීගමුවටත් අහිමව ගොස් තිබෙනවා. 1970, 80වන විට ලංකාවේ වැඩිම හෙද හිගයක් පැවති රෝහලක් ලෙස මීගමුව රෝහලත් නම් කර ඇත්තේ එවැනි පසුබිමක් තුලයි.
1900වන විට දිස්ත්‍රික්කයක්වූ මීගමුව පශ්චාත්-යටත්විජිත යුගය තුල ගෙවීගිය දශක හතක කාලය තුලදී ක්‍රමයෙන් ජරාජීර්නයවන නගරයක් බවට පත්කරලා තිබෙනවා පමණක් නොව, එහි සෞඛ්‍යය තත්වයද පහතට ඇදවැටී තිබේ. මීගමුව නගරය වටා ගොඩනැගී තිබු බොහෝ රජයේ ආයතන පවා අදවන විට ක්‍රමයෙන් ඉවත්කරගනිමින් ඇත. නිදහසෙන් පසු මීගමුවට අත්වූ ඉරණම කවරාකාරද යන්න ගැන මා ලියු මීගමුව කතෝලික ශාසනාරක්ෂක බලමණ්ඩලය සමග මීගමු ජනයා පාරට බසී - දැන් අපි නොනැවතිය යුතුය !!! ලිපියත්, හිටපු සෞඛ්‍ය ඇමැති, දැන් ජනාධිපති, මෛත‍්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන නොසලකා හැරී මීගමුව මහ රෝහල සිය සත් මහල් ගොඩනැගිල්ලෙන් ඉවත්වේ යන ලිපිත් කියවන්න.

Did you know that 1900 Negombo was the most top ranked healthiest district of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)?
Those days, Negombo was a district. Not a part of Gampaha district, Gampaha was not even a district until 1978. But, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Negombo was a separate district. In fact, the smallest, 247.5 square miles, district in Ceylon. It had a population of 148, 240, which was the second most highest densely, 599 for one square miles, populated district of the country then.
But, more than that, Negombo was the healthiest district of Ceylon. According to statistics, Negombo district had the lowest mortality rate, 18.8%. And, the lowest infant mortality, 114 dead (1894- 1904).
Negombo district had the highest number of Catholic nuns who voluntarily worked at the hospital, as well as the medical centres in churches and convents. According to the reports, by the time of 1900, every Catholic church parish in Negombo ran a local dispensary or medical centre in which local people check their children's weights and get medicine for their small injuries. These centres also helped to improve and uplift Negombo district healthcare standards.
In 1963, the Sri Lankan government banned Catholic nuns to work in hospitals and foreign Catholic nuns who also worked at hospitals were deported, their visa extension also stopped.
Today, Negombo is not a district, the healthcare standards are not as fantastic as those days... one by one, the government offices gradually takes out and relocated elsewhere in Gampaha district.
