Negombo has embraced their Easter traditions with the bringing of the Christ Statue to the city centre.

The statue of the Miraculous Christ of Duwa, Negombo, was brought last Sunday (14/02/21) from Duwa's Our Lady of Good Voyage Church (Sindatri Mata Church) to St. Peter's Church at Negombo's city centre.

Ever since St. Peter's Church was built by a group of Duwa Fishermen, it has become the tradition to rotate the Miraculous Statue of Christ between the Duwa Church and St. Peter's Church. Hence, the Statue was kept for two years in the Duwa Church and one year at St. Peter's Church of Negombo. The Statue is now open to the public every Friday from today (19/02) onwards at St. Peter's church, Negombo. 

This life size Christ Statue was created for Duwa Passion Play, in 1838, by Joachim Mistral of Cochin/Kochi, a renowned sculptor of Cochin, India. 'Duwa Historical Passion Play' is believed to be over 300 years old Passion Play in Sri Lanka.

Before the construction of the Munnakkaraya main bridge (the Kothalawala bridge) in 1954, the Statue of Christ was taken from Duwa to Negombo city through Hamilton Canal and Negombo Lagoon. Since the bridges were constructed over the Canal and the Lagoon, the process of bringing back or returning this Miraculous Christ from Duwa to Negombo and back again has become a devotional exercise, as well as a unique event in Negombo's Easter traditions and Negombo culture.

මීගමුව දූවේ ආශ්චර්යමත් ක්‍රිස්තු ප්‍රතිමාව පසුගිය ඉරිදා (14/02/21) මීගමුව දූවේ සින්දාත්‍රි මාතා දේවස්ථානයේ (Our lady of good voyage Church) සිට මීගමුව නගර මධ්‍යයේ පිහිටි සා. පීතර දේවස්ථානය කරා රැගෙන ඒම සිදුකරන ලදි. 

මෙහි දැක්වෙන්නේ එහි ජයාරූප කිහිපයකි. 

දූව දේවස්ථානයේ වසර 2ක්ද, සා. පීතර දේවස්ථානයෙහි වසරක් ද තැම්පත්කර තබන මෙම ආශ්චර්යමත් ක්‍රිස්තු ප්‍රතිමාව ඒ අනුව අද සිට සෑම සිකුරාදාවකම මීගමුව නගර මාධ්‍යයේ පිහිටි සා. පීතර දේවස්ථානයේ විවෘතව තැබේ. 

වසර 300යකට වඩා පැරණි දූවේ පාස්කු දර්ශනය සදහා යොදාගැනීමට 1838 දී ඉන්දියාවේ කොචින් හී සිටි ප්‍රකට මුර්ති ශිල්පියෙකුවූ ජෝකීනු මේස්ත්‍රි (Joachim Mestre of Cochin/Kochi) විසින් නිර්මාණය කර මීගමුව දූවට ගෙන ලද මෙම ක්‍රිස්තු ප්‍රතිමාව එතැන් පටන් මීගමුව ජනයාගේ නොබද ගෞවරවයට පාත්‍රවිය. 1954 මුන්නක්කරය මහ පාලම හෙවත් කොතලාවල පාලම ඉදිවීමට පෙර දූවේ සිට මීගමුව නගර මාධ්‍යයටත්, මීගමුව නගර මාධ්‍යයේ සිට දූවටත් එම ක්‍රිස්තු ප්‍රතිමාව රැගෙන එම සහ රැගෙනයාම සිදුකර ඇත්තේ හැමිල්ටන් ඇළ සහ කලපුව ඔස්සේය. කලපුව හරහා මෙන්ම ඇල හරහාද පාලම් ඉදිකර කිරීමෙන් පසුව පෙරහැරින් සිදුකරන මෙම භක්ති අභ්‍යාසය මීගමුවේ පාස්කු සම්ප්‍රදයේ සුවිශේෂ අංගයකි.
