1909 දෙසැම්බර් මස 01 වෙනි බදාදා දින මීගමුව දුම්රිය ස්ථානය ප්‍රථමවරට විවෘත කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව මීගමුව දුම්රිය ස්ථානය සම්පුර්ණයෙන්ම නවීකරණය කරනු ලැබුවේ 1977 බලයට පත්වූ එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ රජය විසිනි. 1978 ජනවාරි 23 දා එවකට ප්‍රවාහන ඇමතිවරයාවූ M. H. මොහොමඩ් විසින් මුල්ගල තබා මීගමුව දුම්රිය ස්ථානය සම්පුරණයෙන් නවීකරණය කර 1980 අප්‍රියල් 29 දා විවෘත කරනු ලැබුවේ දුම්රිය ස්ථානය ඉදිරිපිට මාළුවෙකු අතදරා සිටින කාන්තාවක් සහිත අපූරු වතුර මලක් සහිත මූර්තියක් ද සමගිනි. මාළුවාගේ කටින් වතුර ගලා එනලෙස සකස් කර තිබු එම මූර්තිය නිසා මීගමුවට අපූර්ව සුන්දරත්වයක් එක් කළේය. 77 ආණ්ඩුව විසින් මීගමුවට ගෙන ඒමට අපේක්ෂා කල මීගමු නවෝදයේ මුල් පියවර මෙය යැයි ඔවුහු උදම් ඇනුහ.
මාලුවෙක් අතැති මෙම මුර්තිය මීගමුවේ ප්‍රකට කර්මාන්තයක් වන ධීවර කර්මාන්තය නිරූපණය කිරීමත් නිසා මෙම මූර්තිය මීගමුවේ අනන්‍යතාවයේද කොටසක් බවට පත්වීමට ගතවුයේ ඉතාමත් කෙටිකලකි. අපි කුඩා කාලයේද ක්‍රියාත්මකවූ මේ වතුර මල දෙස් විදෙස් සංචාරකයින්ගේ ජයාරූපයට නැගුණු, පුවත්පත්වල පවා පින්තූර පළවූ, වෙසක් දිනයට පාට පාට ප්ලෑෂ් ලයිට් එළිවලින් පවා එලියවත් කල මනරම් පොකුණක් සහිත ස්ථානයක් විය. පොකුණේ බැම්මේ මෙන්ම අවට වූ බංකුවලද ජනයා වාඩිවී දුම්රිය පැමිණෙන්න තුරු නිස්කලංකව බලා උන්නේ එහි කිසියම්ම හෝ සුන්දරත්වයක් වූ නිසාමය. යුද්ධය පැවතී සමයේ තඩි යකඩ වැඩක් ගසා කොටුකල මෙම දුම්රිය ස්ථානයේ වතුර මලද ක්‍රියා විරහිත කර දමන ලදී. මාළුවෙකු අතින් ගත් ස්ත්රියගෙන් ගලාහැලෙන වතුර මල පණක් නොව එම මූර්තිය පවා වල්වැදී ගියහ. නැවත ආණ්ඩු බලය එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය හොබවයි. ප්‍රවාහන අමාතංශයදා ඇත්තේ ඔවුන්ටමය. ඒ ආණ්ඩුව සෑදීමට මීගමුවේ එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයේ අති විශාල වැඩි ජන්ද ප්‍රමාණය ලබා දී තිබේ. එහෙත් ඔවුන් මීගමුවට කරන යමක් නැත.
සංවිධායක කම බෙදාගැනීමට බැරිව මරාගැනීමට නම් මීගමුවේ එ. ජා. පක්ෂ නායකයෝ ඕනෑ තරම් සිටිති. එහෙත් ඔවුන්ගේ ආණ්ඩුවක් යටතේ දැනෙන වෙනසක් කිරීමට කිසිවෙක් නැත. වෙන මොකවත් නොව අඩුම තරමින් මීගමුව දුම්රියපොල ඉදිරිපිට ඇති මේ මුර්තිය එලි පෙහෙලිකර වතුර මල වත් නැවත ක්‍රියාත්මක කර මීගමුවට කුඩා හෝ එළියක් ගෙන දීමට ඔවුන්ට හැකියාවක් නැද්ද?
Except for Colombo and Kandy, Negombo is the only city which had those elegant water fountains in those days. It was constructed in 1980 as a part of the renovations process of the Negombo old railway station which opened in Dec.01 of 1909. The Negombo water fountain is a particularly unique one of the country because it matches with Negombo's identity as it is associated with the fishing Industry. Soon it became an iconic symbol of Negombo city, a spectacular photo opportunity for tourists. The edges of the pond and the benches of the railway station has become a cool, calm and relaxing place for local commuters who were waiting for the trains, and for the UNP politicians, it was an awesome propaganda material which showcased the future modernisation of Negombo as they vowed to bring. However, due to the neglection and lack of concentration, many icons of Negombo city has vanished in a glimpse of history such as lamp posts, which has the symbols of fish, crabs, prawns, and boats. And now this elegant water fountain is in the same process of history. During the period of the war, Negombo Railway station was barricaded with heavy metal frames and this elegant water fountain was left unseen and to dry out. I think it is time to raise this issue, at least to draw the attention of others. Especially, from the government, the ruling party, who are busy fighting for their organising posts and not showing any interest to the upkeep of their constituency. This is a good opportunity for them to show their commitment and bring glory back to our city. I wish those iconic things were functioning again and make the beauty of our city visualized again.
